Basically, every first week of the month, I'm supposed to post a list of books that are coming out this month that I cannot wait for. Aaaaand there's a lot of good books out this month! + [two] other things I can't wait for!
The Truth About Alice by Jennifer Mathieu
- Genre: young adult, contemporary, realistic fic, new adult, coming of age
- Expected publication date: June 3rd 2014
- Synopsis (from goodreads):
Everyone has a lot to say about Alice Franklin, and it’s stopped mattering whether it’s true. The rumors started at a party when Alice supposedly had sex with two guys in one night. When school starts everyone almost forgets about Alice until one of those guys, super-popular Brandon, dies in a car wreck that was allegedly all Alice’s fault. Now the only friend she has is a boy who may be the only other person who knows the truth, but is too afraid to admit it. Told from the perspectives of popular girl Elaine, football star Josh, former outcast Kelsie, and shy genius Kurt, we see how everyone has a motive to bring – and keep – Alice down.
- Don't judge me, but the synopsis sort of reminds me of Thirteen Reasons Why? ...Well, okay you can judge. But either way, it's been long since I've read something like this and I can't wait!
- I want to know the truth about Alice. Yes.
Say What You Will by Cammie McGovern
- Genre: young adult, contemporary, realistic fiction
- Expected publication date: June 3rd 2014
- Synopsis (from goodreads):
John Green's The Fault in Our Stars meets Rainbow Rowell's Eleanor & Park in this beautifully written, incredibly honest, and emotionally poignant novel. Cammie McGovern's insightful young adult debut is a heartfelt and heartbreaking story about how we can all feel lost until we find someone who loves us because of our faults, not in spite of them.
Born with cerebral palsy, Amy can't walk without a walker, talk without a voice box, or even fully control her facial expressions. Plagued by obsessive-compulsive disorder, Matthew is consumed with repeated thoughts, neurotic rituals, and crippling fear. Both in desperate need of someone to help them reach out to the world, Amy and Matthew are more alike than either ever realized.
When Amy decides to hire student aides to help her in her senior year at Coral Hills High School, these two teens are thrust into each other's lives. As they begin to spend time with each other, what started as a blossoming friendship eventually grows into something neither expected.
- I don't usually believe those written in the synopses saying that it's like this novel and that, because most of the time they're not true. And my belief goes to this novel as well. I liked the mentioned novels a lot, but really, the worst one can do, is compare novels from each other when there's completely nothing to compare about. [cough cough]Divergent&THG[cough cough] ANYWAY, I really really think it's brave and interesting of authors when they write novels wherein their main character is a special child because I have soft spot for them.
Lies My Girlfriend Told Me by Julie Ann Peters
- Genre: young adult, glbt, realistic fiction, contemporary, romance
- Expected publication date: June 10th 2014
- Synopsis (from goodreads):
When Alix's charismatic girlfriend, Swanee, dies from sudden cardiac arrest, Alix is overcome with despair. As she searches Swanee's room for mementos of their relationship, she finds Swanee's cell phone, pinging with dozens of texts sent from a mysterious contact, L.T. The most recent text reads: "Please tell me what I did. Please, Swan. Te amo. I love you."
Shocked and betrayed, Alix learns that Swanee has been leading a double life--secretly dating a girl named Liana the entire time she's been with Alix. Alix texts Liana from Swanee's phone, pretending to be Swanee in order to gather information before finally meeting face-to-face to break the news.
Brought together by Swanee's lies, Alix and Liana become closer than they'd thought possible. But Alix is still hiding the truth from Liana. Alix knows what it feels like to be lied to--but will coming clean to Liana mean losing her, too?
- In my opinion, Julie Ann Peters is one of the most adventurous contemporary authors out there. I've not read any of her novels before, but most of them are on my to-read shelf because the topics she covers are interesting, intriguing and realistic.
My Last Kiss by Bethany Neal
- Genre: young adult, mystery, paranormal, contemporary, romance
- Expected publication date: June 10th 2014
- Synopsis (from goodreads):
What if your last kiss was with the wrong boy?
Cassidy Haines remembers her first kiss vividly. It was on the old covered bridge the summer before her freshman year with her boyfriend of three years, Ethan Keys. But her last kiss--the one she shared with someone at her seventeenth birthday party the night she died--is a blur. Cassidy is trapped in the living world, not only mourning the loss of her human body, but left with the grim suspicion that her untimely death wasn't a suicide as everyone assumes. She can't remember anything from the weeks leading up to her birthday and she's worried that she may have betrayed her boyfriend.
If Cassidy is to uncover the truth about that fateful night and make amends with the only boy she'll ever love, she must face her past and all the decisions she made--good and bad--that led to her last kiss.
Bethany Neal's suspenseful debut novel is about the power of first love and the haunting lies that threaten to tear it apart.
- Reading this synopsis, I've been reminded of Lauren Oliver's Before I Fall and my urging want to reread it. There is, in no way am I comparing the two novels from each other. Anyway, with The Retribution of Mara Dyer coming out in November (uggggh), I've been in search of a good thriller/paranormal lately and with all the buzz there is for this novel, you can tell, I'm sold. And now I have to wait for this novel to come out.
Inland by Kat Rosenfield
- Genre: young adult, mystery, paranormal, contemporary, romance
- Expected publication date: June 12th 2014
- Synopsis (from goodreads):
The psychological labyrinth of a young woman’s insidious connection to the sea, from the Edgar Award nominated author of Amelia Anne is Dead and Gone.
Callie Morgan has long lived choked by the failure of her own lungs, the result of an elusive pulmonary illness that has plagued her since childhood. A childhood marked early by the drowning death of her mother—a death to which Callie was the sole witness. Her father has moved them inland, away from the memories of the California coast her mother loved so much and toward promises of recovery—and the escape of denial—in arid, landlocked air.
But after years of running away, the promise of a life-changing job for her father brings Callie and him back to the coast, to Florida, where Callie’s symptoms miraculously disappear. For once, life seems delightfully normal. But the ocean’s edge offers more than healing air … it holds a magnetic pull, drawing Callie closer and closer to the chilly, watery embrace that claimed her mother. Returned to the ocean, Callie comes of age and comes into a family destiny that holds generations of secrets and very few happy endings.
- I don't know much about this novel, but yes, I am excited for it.
#scandal by Sarah Ockler
- Genre: young adult, new adult, contemporary, romance
- Expected publication date: June 17th 2014
- Synopsis (from goodreads):
Lucy’s learned some important lessons from tabloid darling Jayla Heart’s all-too-public blunders: Avoid the spotlight, don’t feed the Internet trolls, and keep your secrets secret. The policy has served Lucy well all through high school, so when her best friend Ellie gets sick before prom and begs her to step in as Cole’s date, she accepts with a smile, silencing about ten different reservations. Like the one where she’d rather stay home shredding online zombies. And the one where she hates playing dress-up. And especially the one where she’s been secretly in love with Cole since the dawn of time.
When Cole surprises her at the after party with a kiss under the stars, it’s everything Lucy has ever dreamed of… and the biggest BFF deal-breaker ever. Despite Cole’s lingering sweetness, Lucy knows they’ll have to ’fess up to Ellie. But before they get the chance, Lucy’s own Facebook profile mysteriously explodes with compromising pics of her and Cole, along with tons of other students’ party indiscretions. Tagged. Liked. And furiously viral.
By Monday morning, Lucy’s been branded a slut, a backstabber, and a narc, mired in a tabloid-worthy scandal just weeks before graduation.
Lucy’s been battling undead masses online long enough to know there’s only one way to survive a disaster of this magnitude: Stand up and fight. Game plan? Uncover and expose the Facebook hacker, win back her best friend’s trust, and graduate with a clean slate.
There’s just one snag—Cole. Turns out Lucy’s not the only one who’s been harboring unrequited love...
- I've not read any of Sarah Ockler's yet. I tried reading Twenty Boy Summer about a year ago, but I never really got the muse to finish it because I thought it was cliche and I wasn't buying the writing style, but I have a feeling I'm gonna like this one. I hope I do.
Just Like The Movies by Kelly Fiore
- Genre: young adult, contemporary, romance
- Expected publication date: June 15th 2014
- Synopsis (from goodreads):
Pretty and popular track star Marijke Monti is confident about almost everything – she’s got great friends, a great family, and she’s on her way to the State Track Championship. In fact, the only thing Marijke isn’t confident about is her relationship with Tommy Lawson.
Lily Spencer has spent her entire high school career preparing for the future – she’s participated in every extracurricular activity and volunteer committee she could. But, at home, she watches her mother go on date after date with dud-dudes, still searching for “the one.” Lily realizes that she’s about to graduate and still hasn’t even had a boyfriend.
While they live on each other’s periphery at school, Lily and Marijke never seemed to have much in common; but, after a coincidental meeting at the movie theater, Lily gets an idea – why can’t life be like a movie? Why can’t they set up their perfect romantic situations, just in time for their senior prom, using movie techniques?
Once the girls come up with the perfect plans, they commit themselves to being secret cohorts and, just like in the movies, drama ensues.
- We all need a novel like this once in a while. You know it.
17 First Kisses by Rachel Allen
- Genre: young adult, contemporary, romance, YA chick lit
- Expected publication date: June 17th 2014
- Synopsis (from goodreads):
No matter how many boys Claire kisses, she can’t seem to find a decent boyfriend. Someone who wouldn’t rather date her gorgeous best friend, Megan. Someone who won’t freak out when he learns about the tragedy her family still hasn’t recovered from. Someone whose kisses can carry her away from her backwoods town for one fleeting moment.
Until Claire meets Luke.
But Megan is falling for Luke, too, and if there’s one thing Claire knows for sure, it’s that Megan’s pretty much irresistible.
With true love and best friendship on the line, Claire suddenly has everything to lose. And what she learns—about her crush, her friends, and most of all herself—makes the choices even harder.
In her moving debut, Rachael Allen brilliantly captures the complexities of friendship, the struggles of self-discovery, and the difficulties of trying to find love in high school. Fans of Sarah Ockler, Susane Colasanti, and Stephanie Perkins will fall head over heels for this addictive, heartfelt, and often hilarious modern love story.
- Another one because I need more cheesy novels in my life.
The Things You Kiss Goodbye by Leslie Connor
- Genre: young adult, contemporary, romance, YA chick lit
- Expected publication date: June 24th 2014
- Synopsis (from goodreads):
Bettina Vasilis can hardly believe it when basketball star Brady Cullen asks her out, and she just about faints when her strict father actually approves of him.
But when school starts up again, Brady changes. What happened to the sweet boy she fell in love with? Then she meets a smoldering guy in his twenties, and this “cowboy” is everything Brady is not—gentle, caring, and interested in getting to know the real Bettina.
Bettina knows that breaking up with Brady would mean giving up her freedom—and that it would be inappropriate for anything to happen between her and Cowboy. Still, she can’t help that she longs for the scent of his auto shop whenever she’s anywhere else.
When tragedy strikes, Bettina must tell her family the truth—and kiss goodbye the things she thought she knew about herself and the men in her life.
Leslie Connor has written a lyrical, heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful story about family, romance, and the immense power of love.
- [squeals] !!! The synopsis sounds cliche and typical romance and all that, but hey, why on earth not?
Now, the two more things I'm excited about for this month! (Nope, this does not include school.)
- My friends and I are watching this sometime somewhere and I cannot cannot cannot wait to see it! I loved the trailers so much + this adaptation seems to have a good promise.
