Four: A Divergent Collection :: A Mini-Review

Ayyyyyy It's been ages since I last posted a mini-review. I've been so occupied with a lot of things I barely get the time to write. (Thank you, Senior year.) But, fortunately, I'm a multi-tasking ninja. I get to do quite a lot of things at once. So. Here's another one. Today, I'm talking about our main bae (not the "before anything else" meaning, the person), Four: A Divergent Collection by Veronica Roth.

Fans of the Divergent series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth will be thrilled by Four: A Divergent Collection, a fourth volume in the Divergent series.

Readers first encountered Tobias Eaton as "Four" in Divergent. His voice is an integral part of Allegiant. Readers will find more of this charismatic character's backstory told from his own perspective in Four: A Divergent Collection. When read together, these long narrative pieces illuminate the defining moments in Tobias Eaton's life. The first three pieces in this volume--"The Transfer," "The Initiate," and "The Son"--follow Tobias's transfer from Abnegation to Dauntless, his Dauntless initiation, and the first clues that a foul plan is brewing in the leadership of two factions. The fourth story, "The Traitor," runs parallel with the events of Divergent, giving readers a glimpse into the decisions of loyalty--and love--that Tobias makes in the weeks after he meets Tris Prior.

If you aren't aware of this novel, Four is a collection of four short stories in Four's perspective. They tell us about the things he went through in getting into Dauntless, and then being an instructor, and then meeting Tris.

I'm not gonna hit around the bush further. I love loved loved seeing things through Four's eyes. I've always loved him as a character so I was nothing but excited when my friend and I purchased a copy from the bookshop.

If you've read my review for Allegiant, you might've noted that I started to dislike him for various reasons and well, of course, I didn't want that (who wants ot dislike their main bae? Nobody.) so I wanted so very badly to get into his head, for him to redeem himself as my main bae, and you know what? This novel(-ish?) did the trick.

I liked the way Veronica voiced Four out. I loved reading about his relationship with Marcus, and liked it that we got to see his father in this cautious, i-don't-want-your-life-to-be-in-danger sense. (Although, woah there, I really couldn't take it that Four's sixteen and his father still hits him with a belt? Is Marcus some sort of sadist? That's plain cruel.) I actually wanted to have something as to how Four handled himself some time after Tris died (besides the epilogue in Allegiant), but well, I'm afraid Veronica left the things after that to us--which is well, nice too.

I loved reading about his initiation process. My favorite part would be when we started finding out about the Erudite's plans about killing Abnegation off and how Four acted upon it.

“One thing I know: For helping me forget how awful the world is, I prefer her to alcohol.”

I also liked hearing/reading about those FourTris scenes in Four's point-of-view. I actually didn't just like it. I LOVED IT. (Because oh my gosh, he's so adorable. Although I sort of started seeing it as somehow wrong because... well, Tris is his student--technically--but my shipping heart won me over.) But after all this cuteness, you are reminded that Tris is dead and you start dying a little too. Because yOU'RE OTP'S NOT QUITE A THING ANYMORE AND IT HURTS. SO. MUCH.

“And I stand in the hallway, alone, grinning like an idiot.”

The minor characters! I loved Amar, I loved Zeke, I loved seeing a bit of Uriah and Marlene and Lynn, and I liked Four's relationship with Shauna. We all need friendships like that.

Overall, Four: A Divergent Collection is amazing. I just want to go back and jump into the world of Divergent all over again. Seeing things in Four's perspective is the best thing ever that I want more.

“I am not Tobias Eaton, not anymore, never again. I am Dauntless.”
